Managing the new age workforce

Curious, mobile, tech-savvy, well informed, aspirational, growth-oriented, carving for instant recognition, distracted yet agile !!!!


This could describe the new age workforce. A complete contrast to the workforce a couple of decades back. Goes to show the workplaces have changed dramatically and as we look forward it’s constantly going to. The one question that will possibly be haunting the current set of managers is going to be “ What brings the new age employee purpose in their work and how we need to adapt to a way to manage them?”


Without a doubt that the current workforce comes in with a different type of skills sets and are well informed on various subjects , this calls for a more mature way of dealing with them to help them chart out a journey which is more defining and fulfilling.

A good determinant is to help current managers make a shift towards managing this new age workforce without many disruptions :


Few easily implementable pointers which can help in a smooth transition for management :


Define goals and review constantly through one on one discussions: Adopt a clear and continuous channel/process of communication. The current workforce needs clarity as to where their work efforts are leading to, help them keep track of their projects and provide value addition for seamless execution. Keep records of such interactions/agreements on goal progress works handy during annual reviews.


Let flexibility be a norm to be followed and adapted at both the ends: Encourage and follow work-life balance, the new-gen employees are more productive when given a choice to exercise flexibility for work completion. 


Define a continuous learning/development path and communicate the same: Career growth and self-development are on the top priority for new-gen employees, define a growth path and help them set goals to achieve that by charting out the skills they need to build on. Support and build a continuous learning culture. The more you work on their skills to help them be more relevant the more engagement you can notice towards job and organization.


Drive Innovation at work as an important agenda: Curious minds need to put to right use, innovation agenda-driven across will help the new-gen employees exhibit and try-out initiatives that can yield lasting results for self and the organization leading to competitive advantage. 


Flexibility to collaborate and network: Refrain from drawing out boundaries for this lot. They flourish well when given an environment to collaborate and network. Build on this trait and let the freedom to work around with different work-groups be encouraged. They are even willing to relocate if the work assignments resonate with their career goals and personal beliefs, hence a boundary-less culture should be encouraged. 


Just let their spirits fly high!! : They yearn for instant gratification, never miss out on a chance to shower appreciation for good efforts that go in. Design programs to help them and their efforts being valued and recognized.


Action these pointers and watch the new age workforce lead the organization forward with zeal and improved efficiency at workplace.
